See Amazing, Handmade Beer Steins During Steinfest, Held by Claymakers Gallery

It brings Claymakers Gallery great pleasure to present Steinfest, an annual, national exhibition featuring the German beer stein. Claymakers Gallery is honored to present this diverse group of nationally and regionally known artists who have approached this form in unique and individual ways. See their works for yourself this Saturday, October 12th!

Steinfest gathers a diverse group of ceramic artists who have reinterpreted the form in exceptional ways, bringing together artists whose styles represent the full spectrum of clay techniques. Known for their excellence in craftsmanship, Steinfest artists have elevated the simple beer container to new heights and unexpected directions. There, you’ll see over 200 unique variations of ceramic beer steins created by artists from North Carolina and beyond.

Why focus on the beer stein? Durham is the local food movement writ large. An extension of that movement is to recognize the artists and craftspeople that are creating forms that showcase this food. There is nothing like handling an object created by hand and then drinking from that object. Handcrafted objects are good for the economy as well as the soul.

Gillian Parke is the curator of Steinfeist. Gillian Parke has focused her creative energy on ceramic art for 15 years by combining elements of manufactured porcelain and Japanese pottery to create unconventional works of art. Recently, Parke was named a recipient of the 2008 Emerging Artist Award by Ceramics Monthly magazine, a well-deserved distinction.
