Bamboo Wind Is Many Things! See Exactly What During This Spirited Art Show

Bamboo Wind is a collaborative performance installation at The Fruit, Durham's newest art space and creative warehouse complex.

Bamboo Wind is many things. It is an evening length dance production based on the poem, "Bamboo Wind," choreographed by ShaLeigh Comerford and performed by her company of ten dancers. The dance is set to live original music composed and played by Robbie Link. There will be three photographic essays inspired by the poem and projected on large screens. These have been produced by noted local photographers Catharine Carter, Lynne Feiss Necrason, and Wojtek Wojdynski. It will all take place within a bamboo labyrinth of several thousand square feet filled with bamboo sculptures created by Coke Ariail as well as hanging banners of the poem.

Bamboo Wind, a fusion of Poetry, Photography, Sculpture and Dance, will create a forest of traditionally lashed bamboo sculptures where program attendees will experience an evening of multiple art forms coalescing to create a complete and engrossing world in a wilderness of green bamboo. The shows will take you physically through a three thousand square foot labyrinth of hanging bamboo canes filled with bamboo sculptures, photography and poetry and deliver you finally into an evening length dance concert. It will be a world of images and passions all derived from the seven canto poem, "Bamboo Wind."

When the audience finally arrives in the last space it will open to reveal a large stage area where on stage, the Poet and Poetess will recite the poem as the dancers create a series of seven dances, one for each Canto. Based on ideas derived from the poem and in collaboration with Mr. Ariail, the dances will be choreographed by ShaLeigh Comerford, an internationally trained and recognized dancer.

There will also be a printed booklet of the poem for audience purchase to use when viewing the spaces.

The exhibition and photography slide show will open a 7pm. The dance performance is at 8pm.
