This Old Ballet Is Still a Favorite – Find Out Why During a Performance of Giselle

Founded in 1939, American Ballet Theatre aims to develop a repertoire of the best ballets from the past and support the creation of new works by gifted young choreographers. American Ballet Theatre is one of the world’s preeminent classical ballet companies, a world-touring ambassador for the art form, a committed choreographic commissioner, and an energetic leader in ballet education and outreach. Now, watch in awe as American Ballet Theatre presents Marius Petipa’s Giselle on Thursday, March 26th.

The epitome of Romantic ballet, this heart-rending tale of unrequited love, remorse and forgiveness perfectly fuse music, movement, and drama. The role of Giselle requires an exquisite stylist with daring dramatic and technical skills to create a compelling portrait of the innocent, yet ultimately noble, village maiden. In this universally acclaimed production, American Ballet Theatre’s unrivaled roster of international ballet stars brings Giselle‘s mystery and ethereal beauty vividly to life.

Marius Petipa (1818–1910) was one of the most influential figures of classical ballet. His choreography forms the basis of The Royal Ballet’s productions of The Nutcracker, The Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, Giselle, Don Quixote, La Bayadère and Coppélia, among others.
Petipa’s ballets were grand spectacles that made magnificent use of the corps de ballet and placed the lead ballerina center stage. His theatre and school became a model for all ballet around the globe throughout the 20th century.
